WHO’S RUNNING

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are the leading candidates for the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations and will likely face each other in a rematch of 2020 in the general election in November. They will run at a time when control of the U.S. Congress is up for grabs with Democrats defending a narrow majority in the Senate and Republicans hoping to maintain their tight majority in the House. Elections also take place throughout the country for many statewide offices, including gubernatorial races in 11 states, and hundreds of state legislative races. Elections also are happening at the local level around the U.S. for everything from judges to mayors to school boards.

WHY IT MATTERS TO THE WORLD

The outcome of the presidential election will likely have a big impact on everything from U.S. support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, relations with China and ongoing tensions and conflict in the Middle East. During the first Trump administration, bonds between the U.S. and many of its allies were stress-tested and some worry that if he were to win reelection, the U.S. could become more unpredictable.
